"It's hard for me to imagine any country just
sitting back and letting jobs go offshore without
raising some level of concern and investigation,"

This also caught my eye and attention. The passivity of the US worker in
the face of global outsourcing makes me think that

a. they are brain dead

b. they are scared beyond belief (if I raise my voice, maybe they will take
me next)

c. they are apathetic in the face of the inevitabiltiy of the theology of
the market. The religion of market capitalism has its ups and its downs and
we must accept the bad with the good.

Probably some combination of all three.

the Market

Fine article in the NYT a couple days ago
about high paying white-collar graduate degree
jobs going to India (etc.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/22/technology/22JOBS.html

"The net" (as in "executive summary", not
Microsoft product...) is that, just
as Marx explained that humane employers could not shorten
the work week in Britain in the 19th century except
under cover of legal mandate, so too, today, I.B.M. is powerless
to preserve jobs in the U.S.A. for the exact same
reason:

"Our competitors are doing it and we have to do it"

I have summarized the NYT articla at

     http://www.users.cloud9.net/~bradmcc/quotes6.html#Q178

But there is an interesting aside from the IBM spokesperson,
which directly addresses what is most wonderful (in the
taxonomic not deontic sense of being implausible,
not honorable!) about Dubya nad his fellow-travellers:

"It's hard for me to imagine any country just
sitting back and letting jobs go offshore without
raising some level of concern and investigation,"

(How *can* the President of The United States sell
his country out and not be impeached?) Oh, well,
maybe the answer is that Dubya Bush, like Judas Iscariot,
is on a vital mission to fulfill God's Will....
