Chris may have hit upon an "iron law" of human behaviour with this:

"The point was that members of an oppressed minority achieve personal
advantages/privileges by playing by the rules of the oppressing majority,
turning against their own minority in the process. Basically, that is
what Blacks and Natives in the U$ army have been doing."
[snip]

To once again repeat myself (or, rather, Mr. Brecht):

Student: Happy the land that breeds a hero.
Galileo: No. Unhappy the land that needs a hero.

(Amusing aside: Until I actually looked this quote
up, for years I did not think it
was in _Galileo_. I thought the
exchange was between the 2 recruiting sargeants in
the 30 Years War, in _Mother Courage and her Children_ --
they certainly *could* have said it.)
