Eduardo sent me advice, but I did not check that he sent it to my
email address only, and not to the list, obviously to keep the list
bulge slim. Excuse me, I'll be more mindful from now on.

This is true - I postponed it, aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben i.e.
postponed is not forgotten, because I thought at the time that learning
more basics is more important. In those cases I normally seek a quick
solution and come back to the problem when I think that I learned
enough.

I inserted this into my .fvwm2rc, then into ConfigFvwmBacker, then
into the system-wide ConfigFvwmBacker (of course the AddToFunc... into
.fvwm2rc) and I tried to use a .fvwm2rc containing only those lines
with always the same result of a very smooth, eye-friendly, grey
background. No gradient.

On the contrary the line (without the > of course)

> MenuStyle * MenuFace VGradient 70 2 white 50 grey 50 black

gives a perfect presentation of the gradient effect in the menus.
My problem is, how to port that to the background. I must be missing
something too obvious, and did not want to complain "it does not work".

If I understand correctly, the lines:

> Colorset 7 VGradient 70 2 white 50 grey 50 black
> *FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 0) Colorset 7

inserted into ConfigFvwmBacker should be enough to generate the effect.
Because, when I insert

> *FvwmBacker: Command (Desk 1, Page * *) -solid steelblue

and say

> read ConfigFvwmBacker Quiet.
> AddToFunc StartFunction I Module FvwmBacker

in .fvwm2rc, then Desk 1 is solid steel blue.

I experimented and read - the different types of DGradient, SGradient
&c with all the colours of /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt are quite fun to
try out, but I only get them to work on window titels and menus.
As I said, I must be missing something too obvious. Perhaps you see
that though I can't get ConfigFvwmBacker to work with VGradient, I'm not
sitting back doing nothing.

Cheers, Erich
