Years ago I added this to my config to solve this problem:
DestroyFunc EWMHActivateWindowFunc
Style * !FPFocusByProgram
More recently the 2nd line caused problems with Java keyboard focus so I
commented it out. The DestroyFunc alone seems to be working fine.
