You're right.  This has nothing to do with FVWM, and your question is much
better off posted to the Ubuntu forums, or whever it is you feel is

I assume GNOME logs to ~/.xsession-errors like most things?  If it does look
there.   Note that I assume when you say "GNOME" you mean GNOME and that
hideous mess of a window manager metacity, as opposed to FVWM running within
GNOME?

Of course they can coexist, and I would surmise the presence of FVWM with
respect to GNOME's failure is simply a red herring in this instance.  I would
almost certainly move any ~/.gnome/ directories (or whatever it is GNOME
uses) out of the way, and then see if that helps when you next try to load
GNOME.

Then it's most likely an issue with what GDM is loading via its 'session'
(probably defined within one if its .desktop files).  Note that I know next
to nothing about GNOME, and am proud of that fact.
