Just a quick note:

1. Intermittent hangs were not related to this issue, it was because I started 
my tray app without 'Exec exec' and fvwm was handing in 
FvwmFlushMessageQueue() (in select() call from FvwmSelect(), actually). Did 
not debug it thoroughly, but it seems that fvwm thought that tray was a 
module and tried to post messages to its stdin.

2. To disable GNOME background it is required to 
set /desktop/gnome/background/draw_background to false in gconf.
