I realized that if you only had an ubuntu disk and wanted to upgrade to
kubuntu, you can just install plain old ubuntu and then:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop 

Also if you're running the gnome desktop in ubuntu, (not sure about KDE)
you can do:

Applications->Add/Remove... 

That's a menu item I overlooked for months, possibly because it made too
much sense.
