Charlie,

I know that the 64 bit stuff has always been finicky. I usually tell 
people to just run the i386 version and be happy - only if they want 
pain should they go 64.

As for kubuntu-desktop, the same trick works on older machines to 
install xubuntu (the xfce version) which is now quite usable on slower 
machines.
