Mike, Printer cables have often been the culprit behind issues like this, so I am going to assume you have done something to rule them out. Like take the cable end from aix and plug it into the linux box.
Here are a few more ideals;\ 1. Determine if AIX is using any print aids like CUPS or HPlp???? If yes, match those high level config on linux. If no, contine with next tip. 2. Find the Linux machines print controler apps, and remove the parallel device from their configurations. There is a printer icon, cups, hplip, samba, and maybe a console logger. example:/etc/cups/printers.conf 3. Try your master file again by cat'ing it to the raw port. /dev/lp0 4. The linux bootparams include an 'lp=' setting but it does not look too promising.
