Yeah, that's the way that mailman does it. Setting a password is
completely optional and they do warn you that it's plain text and warn
not to use a valuable password when you sign up:
> "You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild
> security, but should prevent others from messing with your
> subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally
> be emailed back to you in cleartext.

It's not an option that I can see how to tweak, but if you know of a
quick way to change that behavior in mailman, let me know. Otherwise,
I'm afraid
the work-around is to unsubscribe and then re-subscribe, and not give a
password.
