Hey everyone,
My name is Nick and I have been on the mailing list for a
couple months now. However, I haven't been able to make it to a meeting.
I hope to sometime soon since my work schedule is lightening up. I have
a few questions for the people in the group.
- How long have you been using Linux, and what distribution do you use?
Started experimenting with it in 1996, used as primary OS since 2000
- Are any of you active on a Linux forum of any type?
Uh, this one. ;) Also the K12OS list, which is dedicated to Linux in
K-12 schools.
- What are the most important things to learn in Linux once you feel
fairly comfortable with it.
"It depends" - what kinds of things do you want to do? If you are
interested in the sysadmin side of things, then the various commands and
how they can be combined is one of the most important things to grasp,
followed closely by shell scripting. This involves learning a new way of
thinking as much as learning the commands and syntax. For an I idea of
what I'm talking about, see Neil Stephenson's "In the Beginning Was the
Command Line" (http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html) and Eric
Raymond's "Art of Unix Programming" (http://www.faqs.org/docs/artu/).
- Could you give me some good links to a few tutorials? I'm wanting to
dig deeper into just about anything now that I have some more time.
I'll leave it to the others to suggest things that have worked well for
them.
Cheers,
Vern
Thanks,
Nick
