Hope I'm not replying too late to be relevant. Responses inline:

I've been using Ubuntu at home and at work for about 2 years. It started
at work, either my current workstation was flaking out or my teams new
workstations came in and I was fed up with dealing with Windows. Most of
the sample code and tools I was using at the time came in Linux flavors.
Also the entire server target for my app was Linux so I switched.

FWLUG is the only Linux specific one. I also try to represent the *nix
side of things over at mirthproject.org, a cross-platform medical
interface engine.

I had tinkered with Linux before, but what finally made it stick was not
using it for the sake of using it, but using it to get things done. I
needed to get online, check email, etc etc at home so I learned what I
needed to do to make that happen. At work I needed to hack code,
maintain servers, build servers, and integrate with the rest of the
companies Windows machines so I learned how to do that.

See my previous point. What do you currently use your computer for that
you need to do under Linux? What apps are you using that aren't cross
platform? Do you need to virtualize or dual boot? And so on..

Hope this helped. I look forward to meeting you at the next FW-LUG
event!
