I'm liking 8.10! The new flash 10 is in the repositories, which is awesome
because it doesn't crash Firefox all the time anymore. Its ATI graphics card
support is amazing. I have always had trouble with suspend and hibernate, not
anymore though. Sadly, nVidia proprietary drivers are still in the works, or so
I hear.
I had 3 problems with Linux that used to drive me nuts:
My suspend would work about half the time. (Fixed)Firefox would crash often
when I went on sites that used Flash. (Fixed)VLC would flicker my videos
whenever I had my desktop effects enabled.
The VLC thing was ridiculously easy to fix. So easy that I am mad that it took
me this long to figure out. I just changed the video output to X11 (I think it
used OpenGL before). Now there is no more flickering!
So, with this release I have no more complaints about things not working in
Linux. Well, except I can't get my wife's "WinkFlash Transporter" to run in
WINE, but I've never expected perfection out of WINE, so I'm still happy.
The package ubuntu-desktop now shows programs like Evolution as
"Recommended" which is nice if you want to remove programs without
removing everything because of dependencies. I use VLC instead of
Totem, Banshee instead of Rhythmbox, I never use Evolution, and I never use
Tracker, so it's nice to be able to remove them without conflicts now.
Also, you have to fully remove tracker and evolution to make them not
use any RAM. They always show up, even if you have them disabled. The new
Network Manager 0.7 is nice; it makes it much easier to connect to my hidden
network at home.Gimp 2.6 is cool, but I can't figure out how to get it to show
up as only one task on my Avant-Window-Navigator. That is supposed to be a new
feature of 2.6, but I haven't really tinkered with it much.Tabbed browsing in
Nautilus is really neat. I haven't found a real use for it yet, but I like the
idea.
The USB Creator idea is nice, though I haven't used it... yet
I'm a little disappointed about still having OOo 2.4, but I understand why they
didn't include OOo 3. I can live without or wait for a backport.Compiz-Fusion
has some neat yet unnecessary features added to it. The wallpaper plug-in is
great for having different wallpapers on each workspace. Cube deformation is
neat too. Compiz-Fusion is just cool to me, but if it didn't work I'd be fine
with that.
VLC 9.4 is in the repositories now. It works great, but I'm not sure how I feel
about it using QT.Banshee 1.2 is also in the repositories. It is able to play
videos now, though I still prefer VLC. I find banshee the best tool if you have
an ipod like my wife does.Hmm... that's all I can think of right now, but that
is my really long way of saying "I like Intrepid Ibex".
