It seems to me that the programmer is the modern-day equivalent of the blacksmith of old: one of the few craftsmen who could make all his/her own tools (if he/she had the time)... --- I personally prefer writing tools that do my job for me than actually doing the job itself. I remember reading (in a book on PCCCTS?) a comment to the effect of: "Why spend an hour doing a task, when you could spend the next five years of your life automating it?" My sentiments exactly.
