The iBooks aren't bad machines, I had a 12" Dual USB 500 for about 3
years and was satisfied with it. They are a little daunting to work
on, tho'.
With the prices coming down, I'd look at a Powerbook. I recently
picked up an 15" Aluminum, 1.5GHz 'book on eBay for $525. One of the
big things for me, besides being a better machine all over, was the
ability to use my PCMCIA USB adapter... I have a lot of USB
thingies. :-)

My Powerbook had a DVD R/RW burner, 512 MB ram and an 80 GB hard
drive. I've increased to ram to 2GB and the hard drive, while on the
small-ish side these days, is only about half full. Most stuff goes to
the 250GB external drive or a 4GB flash drive. (Some of those USB
thingies! ;-> )
