Same reason I have my gmail account set up in Mail.

I can get it and send it from anywhere and it's still on their server  
if you set it as an IMAP account.

This way I don't have to use the craptacular web interface.

I just don't know if I can send, for instance, my pharmacy email  
through google's SMTP servers if I authenticate to google.

Haven't tried it.
