Malcolm It was given to me with the 'its get very hot' line. However, I have had a lot of iBooks/PowerBooks and they all get hot - some very hot.
So far I have installed OSX and the updates and some software and browsed on it for an hour or so and it got hot, but not out of character for an Apple portable. Maybe my friend just isn't used to Apple portables and the heat they give off. Maybe it doesn't have a big problem after all. Wouldn't have thought it was on the way out just because the palm rest gets warm - is it the original stock 4200 RPM drive ? Can you get any monitoring s/w for it at all, for temp and or fan speed, I'd personally not worry about heat unless your machine starts shutting down at random.
