I finally got around to completing the surgery on my 1.25 ghz 12"
iBook and swapped the HD out last night. It was my first time and
took about 3 hours (ouch!). The results were disheartening. . .the
new hard drive behaved just like the old one. It won't boot. It's
beginning to appear as if the real problem is the IDE controller on
the mobo (unless you guys have other ideas. . .). I took the 30 gig
drive that I removed, and, just for fun, plugged it into a Lombard I
am rebuilding. I was expecting to be told that it is incompatible
with this computer because it is running Tiger 10.4.11. Lo and
behold, it boots! I just did a Apple Software update with no
problems. Is this a disaster waiting to happen or should this behave
normally from now on? This is definitely not something I expected.
