I removed the RAM on top of the CPU board and then pressed down very
firmly with both thumbs. Once I got the tactile feedback from the
pressing, I put them back together and started them up. They both work
now.

The service manual mentions reseating the CPU card, but it doesn't
really mention the need to use such firm pressure. And usual sensible
practice would advise against it, but the CPU pins are quire short and
need the pressure to get them into the socket.
