Open System Profiler and click on the Power under Hardware.  Compare 
Charge remaining (when fully charged) vs Full charge capacity.  Also 
look at the Cycle count and Condition.  Post the info here if you want 
and we can give you an evaluation.

This info should tell you how new the battery is.
