I've been so used to using a fairly recent Pioneer DVD burner that I
didn't realize how limited slightly older DVD-ROM drives were. It's
certainly frustrating, and I assumed it had to do with Apple-branded
drives vs. generics, but apparently that's not the case.

I suppose combo drives (CD burner / DVD reader) have some firmware
updates, but apparently DVD-ROM's have very few, then.

So - how much would it cost to get a decent DVD burner for a Pismo?
Not cheap, I bet.

My inexpensive solution is to not bother with movies at all, and just
make sure that I burn Mac data onto, say, Verbatim DVD-R's. I was able
to boot with a backup copy of Tiger burned on a Verbatim DVD+R, but
not with an exact duplicate on an Imation or JVC DVD+R (both were
manufactured by Ritek).
