You didn't mention which G3 powerbook, but if it has a SCSI port, then use SCSI Target mode, hooked up to another Mac with SCSI. If it has a Firewire port, then use Firewire Target mode, hooked up to another Mac with Firewire. Once the other Mac sees the problematic G3 as an external hard drive, just copy the files at will.
