If you look on the parts lists, there are two power managing boards in
the computer itself (I have a pismo), there is one behind the battery
compartment and one where the ac adapter plugs in (the second one is
also the audio ports, which are bad on mine which is why I was looking
at this before) -- the first one knows the battery and it could be at
fault here. If you still have the old battery you could try that if it
has even a little power left to test...( I just recycled mine today
but it did have 10minutes live and a few hours sleep left in it).

I also have a fairly new battery, I did notice once recently it went
from maybe 40% to 0 in second after waking. I had had it in sleep for
maybe 4 or 5 days, and there were a bunch of apps going (maintaining
the RAM takes power). Anyway I nearly never run it all the way down
intentionally as I don't know how long till I plug it in for certain,
or when I can find a stopping point either (I try at stop around 10%
minimum).

Jeremy Keezer did also write a battery monitor and health meter for
osX BTW.

Anyway there's my experience.
