One thought, I've seen several iBooks where the cooling fan quit  
running, and the HD overheated and got bad. If you don't hear or feel  
the fan running, it's possible you need a new fan? Normally, data can  
be salvaged off an overheated HD by letting it cool and then  
transferring the data as fast as possible, or using an external air  
source to cool the HD by blowing air into the laptop.
