I don't think that's it. Yes it does get through the first part like you said however when I tried last night I was going through target mode and running it on my mac mini and I know my mini dvd drive is good. Today I was running a cd rom off the ibook itself and it did the same thing. So I am not sure about that. A friend of mine is taking it home tonight he is going to try and install 10.4 first using his external dvd burner so we will see then. I will keep all posted how it goes. Hopefully this will take care of it.
