my pismo with a g4 550 upgrade gets fan action when a program is
maxing the cpu for a good while. Never when backing up (up to say 15GB
at a time). When doing massive builds is when I hear it (I have done a
fair amount of this since it is my most efficient Watts computer even
if it takes a while).

It usually goes on for a little while and then goes off again. It also
used to go on in target mode after maybe 15 minutes or so (it won't do
target anymore because of some weird thing with the 80GB Seagate hard
drive I just put in)
