I haven't been following most of this thread, so this question may  
have been answered already -- but here's my input --

On my Pismo, the fan very rarely comes on. But it almost always  
starts up if the Pismo has been sitting in the sun and I try to use  
it (my favorite computing chair is just inside a south facing  
window). That black plastic really soaks up the heat from the sun.

So if you want to test out your fan, I recommend leaving the Pismo in  
a sunny window for awhile!
