Pismos use a generic drive, 12.7mm (0.5000") high, the so-called  
"slim" drive, not the 9.7mm so-called "super-slim" drive.

However, the original drives were very limited as to the media which  
these would accept. Manufactured DVDs and manufactured CDs are  
supported. Burned media are always iffy.

A modern burner, such as those removed from Minis, are compatible  
with the Pismo's caddy. A UJ-845 seems to ring a bell.

I'm not saying you should replace his drive with a modern one, I'm  
just saying a modern drive, a true burner, would have no problems  
with manufactured or burned media.

While I was still using an original DVD drive in my Pismo and  
Lombard, I had to "dual inventory" everything, as my "set-top" boxes  
wanted + media, while my PowerBooks wanted - media (if they would  
accept burned media at all).
