Bruce, I'm not sure I understand your question. But, yes, I've since removed 
the CD in the optical drive. In fact, when I started the laptop with the HD in 
the external Firewire case---and it worked---the optical drive was still 
connected. So, I think there is no problem with the optical drive. I'm now 
trying to resolve whether replacing the HD ribbon cable would sort the problem 
finally. As the laptop still won't boot with the HD installed in it, using the 
ribbon cable. Are these cables known to go bad? Or, is it the part on the 
motherboard they're attached to that's gone bad---or is known to go bad?
