Status update: I found my old 20 GB 5400 rpm IBM Travelstar drive - the one I upgraded my 400 MHz TiBook with before going to 40 GB. I've partitioned the drive 7 GB and the balance (about 12 GB). I've copied Mac OS 9.2.2 to it, as well as a slimmed down System Folder for a 256 MB Compact Flash card in a PC Card adapter.
Next step is to clone Tiger to it. Once I get more memory, I'll be ready to rock. Hoping to benchmark the existing drive and swap in the new one tomorrow. I've been running Battery Amnesia on my good battery about once a day. First time it lasted 128 minutes - last time, 167! That's without AirPort, but I'm very impressed.
