Compact disks like all flash memory DO "wear out."  This has to do more with
write cycles than for read cycles tho.  SanDisk did a white paper on this in
2003--here's the info on that:

Note that most Cf can replace blocks that wear out, and that the life
expectancy is a million+ cycles--but it IS finite.  (For that matter all
hard drives will fail at some point, too.)

A recent article in either MacWorld or MacLife talking about the solid-state
drives now being offered even stated that flash memory has a finite
life--tho they did mentioned this only in passing.
