Subject: Pismo tone on startup

'm trying to get my old Pismo ready to give a friend. When I start it
p there's a brief but steady tone, then it chimes after a few
econds. What does the tone signify? It's similar to a dial tone (but
hat isn't it).
'll appreciate any help I can get. My friend is waiting patiently.
