I have found following applies in relation to my Wallstreet, and I think it probably also applies to Pismo. (Someone please correct this if it's wrong...)
All USB 2.0 cards are based on the EHCI (Extended Host Controller Interface) standard. However, backwards compatibility to USB 1.0 may be provided via either of two competing standards - OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) or UHCI (Universal Host Controller Interface). On the Mac under OS 9, USB is supported via OHCI, with max data transfer speeds of 12MB/sec. Under OS-X, this limitation was removed with support provided for EHCI, giving USB 2.0 speeds of 480MB/sec. Hence some USB 2.0 cards will work under OS-X, but not under 0S-9. If you need OS-9 compatibility, look for a cards which support EHCI/OHCI rather than EHCI/UHCI. But I'm curious - doesn't your Pismo have built-in USB and Firewire? ..
