And to add to what Bruce is saying , here is an article I copied from OSXHints
a couple of years ago after running into the same problem on a friends G3 iBook.

"Even without the necessary drivers, any FireWire or USB CardBus PC card will
mount on the desktop with a generic icon when inserted in the PCMCIA/CardBus
slot. You probably do not have the necessary USB drivers installed.

Take a look in your Extensions folder for these items:

USB Support
USB Software Locator
USB Device Extension
USB Mass Storage Support
USB Mass Storage Extension

If not present, download them here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit

OWC has put together different version numbers of these extensions to overcome
a problem Apple had with OS 9.2.x and USB PC cards. Here is what you will get
when expanded:

USB Support v1.4.1
USB Software Locator v1.5.6
USB Device Extension v1.5.6
USB Mass Storage Support v2.0.4
USB Mass Storage Extension v2.0.4

Drag all five extensions on top of the closed System Folder icon...they will be
placed in the Extensions folder.

Before restarting:

-Turn OFF (uncheck) the 'allow processor cycling' for both battery and power
adapter in the Energy Saver > Advanced Settings; failure to do so will cause
the powerbook to freeze with the USB software and when a USB PC card is
inserted.

Now restart "
