These hiccups have two main causes:

shortage of bandwidth, either on the server or client side
Lack of processing power on the client side.

A 900 Mhz system should be able to play back Youtube-scale movies  
without too many problems.

You can, in the case of youtube, click on the pause until the whole  
clip is loaded (you can see the progress bar) and then trying to play  
it. This is a fix for bandwidth issues.

You can use something like Cosmopod (for safari), and there are a  
number of plug-ins for Firefox to do this, (someone with more  
experience with FF can chime in with a recommendation) and then play  
the clips locally.

If they don't play well even after doing that, there's nothing to do  
but add more RAM or get a faster computer, but a 900 Mhz G3 should be  
able to manage playback without issues.
