Is ClicktoFlash better than SafariStand?
"better" is relative. YMMV; keep good backups,
etc etc etc.
ClickToFlash deals with Flash. SafariStand has other
features that you many find useful.
ClickToFlash is a true plug-in, that runs only in Safari.
It is open-source, so you can check out its code. It seems to be
totally stable; I have not had or seen a single Safari crash that
involved it.
SafariStand is an InputManager (*) being converted into a
plug-in, for 64-bit apps on Snow Leopard. It is closed-source,
so it cannot be inspected. I fooled around with SafariStand a
while ago - found it to be a rather crashy, and it broke further when
the OS or Safari was updated. Hopefully it has improved since
then.
(*) Unlike true app Plug-Ins, InputManagers are code blocks
injected into EVERY process (running app). That means their bugs
can wreak havoc on your system. And it means there are some
serious security implications - so serious that Apple has restricted
them in Leopard and killed them off completely in 64-bit Snow Leopard
apps.
One way of limiting the damage that an InputManager can do, is to
use SIMBL (this is what the author of SafariStand recommends).
SIMBL is an InputManager that treats its subscribing InputManagers
like Plug-ins, trying to limit their scope. The catch: SIMBL is
one of the most evil buggy InputManagers around. It is so
problematic that Apple has repeatedly recommended it be removed,
because it has been known to cause kernel panics.
FWIW,
- Dan.
