There are various companies that will reball (resolder) the chip to  
the board. The prices range from $30-$200 or so, based on my  
research, and some require you to completely remove the logic board  
and send it in for repair. Your mileage may vary, though. Some  
repairs hold for years; others for mere weeks.

The action of the video chip shorting and opening on the logic board  
will cause complete system freezes, as well and video blackout. This  
is typical behavior for this problem.
