John,
This may sound silly, but have you checked the volume level? I know
that on my Lombards, the G5 and my minis, the volume of the chime is
dependent on the volume before the restart. Make sure it's not muted
and/or turned all the way down. After that, try resetting the PRAM.
That's all I can come up with.
