HI ALL
I have a G3 Wallstreet 300MHz 512MB RAM 10.4.11, that has stopped chiming at
start up it will chime if I do a force restart. I ran DiskWarrior and Disk
Utility but no cigar. Does this mean a logic board problem?
John,
This may sound silly, but have you checked the volume level? I know
that on my Lombards, the G5 and my minis, the volume of the chime is
dependent on the volume before the restart. Make sure it's not muted
and/or turned all the way down. After that, try resetting the PRAM.
That's all I can come up with.
Yes I tried that . The funny thing is it will chime with a force restart and
chime during ZAP PRAM from a force restart, but not on normal start up.
I wonder if XPostFacto has something to do with it. I really don't care if it
chimes because everything else works perfectly. I was just concerned that maybe
a problem is lurking.

Rather than just a pram reset try a full open firmware re-set
ie boot into OF (cmd-opt-O-F at boot I think)
then
reset-nvram (Enter)
set-defaults (Enter)
reset-all (enter)
I think I have the commands correct, if not then someone with better
memory will jump in to correct me, this should clear anything that may
be muting the chime (it will also reset things like startup disk selection)
Also there are utilities such as:
http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html
http://www.satsumac.com/Psst.php
http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/startupchimestopper/Startup%20Chime%20Stopper.html
and others.
these normally install into the System Preferences, I find them useful
(I use StartupSound) as I tend to use my Pismo in the bedroom and a loud
blast when you re-boot at 1am is not much appreciated.)
Is it possible that someone has installed one of these in the past?
Ben.
