I've got a dual USB 500 MHz iBook. Screen went dead. I can hear the hard
drive when I start it up. I tried connecting it to an external monitor out
of the video port, and nothing. I tried using Firewire from the iBook to a
new MacBook, while starting the iBook while holding down the "T" key (the
iBook beeps briefly when I start it up in that "target" mode), but I don't
see the iBook HD on the MacBook. I read that in order for the Firewire
method to work, one needs a recent version of the Firewire driver. Perhaps
that's the problem (I don't know what version I have on the iBook, and since
I can't "see" the machine, I can't tell.

Any suggestions for how I can "see" the contents of the iBook or fix the
problem?
Thanks!
Harvey

Since you arent getting any video of the video-out port, it is quite likely you have the BGA issue in the video chip. the long-term solution is to remove the motherboard and have it sent out for reflow. The short term resolution that you need might be possible if you "shim" the chip. If you remove the bottom case plastic, and place a few playing cards on the spot where the video chip is on the motherboard, then put the bottom plastic back on, it can provide enough pressure on the video chip so that it will work for a while longer.
