Unless you're doing a lot of work that requires color, B&W laser printers
have usually had a better cost-per-page ratio than other printers. Yes,
they cost more up front, but you get more pages-per-cartridge that brings
the cost down. Inkjet printers use the old "razor blade" method of
pricing--sell the printer (razor) cheaply, make the refill specific to that
model, and then sell the refills at a high markup. I know some people
stretch this out with refilling inkjet carts, but I've had mixed results
with that--quality as well as once killing a printer with bad ink.

When I need color printing say when I officiate at a wedding and print up
the couple's keepsake marriage certificat, it's been cheaper for me to go
over to FedEx/Kinko's and run off a couple of copies on their printers.
Better quality than I've seen from home printers too. (I'm a Humanist
Celebrant for those wondering. :) )
