For what it's worth - I've had the same experience on PC hardware. Ubuntu always looks nice, but it is never quite up to date enough. For example, I had issues coding in the latest version of Mono, as they didn't have a copy in their repository and I needed to update to the bleeding edged version of Ubuntu to get support. That version was buggy and things stopped working correctly. Most other Linux distros had the correct files available, but I needed a Debian based Linux for some other project work I was doing.
