Allow me to second the Google Calendar suggestion. I'm using it to keep my 
calendars synced from my Blackberry to the several machines I actually use, 
and it's been great for me. I can keep my schedule on everything, and I've got 
it at my fingertips, no matter where I am.

If he wants to sync it with an actual client, iCal and Mozilla Sunbird both 
work really well. (I use a mix of iCal, Sunbird and Kontact here.)
