Hi All- still muddling along. The laserprinter could never be connected directly to my G-4 (had to use an Assante...). BUT, the Wallstreet has the right port- I am not sure what to call it. Round with 8 holes.

That would be a serial port.

I would like to know if there IS a name so I can check to see what other models have that type of printer(?) port.

Macs up through the "Smurf" blue and white and powerbooks through the Wallstreet had this port.

In trying to figure out how to connect the laserprinter to other computers I boiled it down to needing (deep breath) a female 8 pin mini DIN converted to USB.

There are devices to give you a serial port out of a USB port, but not the other way around. Thus you could connect one of these devices (Keyspan made a version) to a computer's USB port and then use a serial cable to connect the device to the printer.

So the plug on the laser printer is a male 8 pin mini DIN-- anyone know if there is a specicic name for the commensurate plug? I actually called HP to see if they could help me and they swore up and down that the laser printer had no such plug.

Afraid you lost me here. I have never seen a "male" plug on a device, only on cables.

I managed to find it in specs on line but not much else. I did manage to find something that seems to be the converter---but first (before I consider the connector--which may or may not be the correct item!)I'd like to know

Ha! A Keyspan USB to serial adapter, as I mentioned above. I believe they were originally developed to adapt older serial printers to USB equipped computers.

if anything other than the Wallstreet has the right port! OPh yeas, I have been to all the local places and asked HP and Appe- no one seems to know anything at all about it. Using the connector would (I hope) make the printer run with USB. If anyone is interested- this is the link to that connector.
