You will find, the +/- makes a world of difference. Most drives prefer one over the other. My Macbook prefers DVD+R. I don't have a lower spec machine to compare to.
You will find burn speed makes a big difference. An 8x drive, might only really handle 4x in the real world. Burning at max speed makes coasters on a lot of systems.
Using an older version of Toast that is not fully compatible with the drive will make coasters. The software generally configures the laser by talking to the underlying hardware via the OS. I Used to burn all my CDs from the command line, back in the day. Tweaking settings was a minefield back then.
The drives Apple use are OEM. They are used elsewhere too. You'd expect bad hardware to be more notorious.
