I found the compact flash card must be 200X speed or faster to be reliable. The brands I used were Sandisk, Centon and Patriot and they worked fine.
The CF adapter is a generic brand sold by resellers on eBay and other sources. What gets tricky is you need to remove one pin on the adapter to fit in the female IDE connector. The challenge is not knowing what is the top and bottom and what pin to remove. I've removed the wrong pin before ruining it, but they are cheap enough, I'd just get a couple to experiment with.
