I had an iBook G3 with the video issue, same thing really. I took the bottom case off and placed 2 quarters on the video chip, put it back together and it worked fine. I used it for a few months and then sold it. The person I sold it to knows the issue so if I decide to open it up, they win 50 cents :)
We discussed how poor a choice that quarters were as shims to press the graphics chip on tighter a long time ago. If you're going to shim your chip, use something that's NON-CONDUCTIVE as a shim, nothing metal. Also, don't use anything that's flammable either, the chip gets very hot. I'd probably use some sort of hard, heat resistant plastic. A cut up CD might be good, or a credit card.
Again, I think this video chip problem was restricted to G3 iBooks, and the description of the problem with this G4 iBook doesn't match the symptoms I've seen. This G4 iBook "freezes", whereas the G3 iBook with the video chip problem usually works normally except with screwed up display graphics.
