That depends on how it died. If it was premature then it could be either a bad battery or a problem in the laptop. I replaced the battery in my G4 iBook long ago. It just wore out from use. You could try swapping the battery and iBook with another known good version of each if possible. Otherwise about the only way to find out is to buy a new battery. Odds are the battery just died a normal death. There are assorted problems that can crop up with the circuitry in the iBook but the battery is the far more likely problem.
