The end of the line is indeed iTunes 8.2.1, as far as full compatibility is concerned. However, if you want some of the new good stuff, you can go up to either 9.0 or 9.1, can't remember exactly right now, but I can attest that v9.0. worked just fine on my Pismo. After that, though, all hell breaks loose. Not sure as to where you can find that particular version, though...
