I worked throughout my first two years in college with my trusty
PowerBook G3 (the Pismo version). It is still a really nice machine,
but unfortunately most software I need to run either runs very slowly
or not at all, so I had to replace it with an Asus netbook...

But the Pismo still helps a lot, and I've downgraded it to 10.3.9 in
order to make it work faster. It lasts about 6-7 hours on a charge,
which is still impressive, and is able to connect to most wireless
hotspots. Could you do that with a non-Apple 10-year-old machine?
Probably not... ;)

However, my iMac is just a little over 4 years old and it is beginning
to show its age. My impression is that machines are less supported in
time than they were before... when I get to the point I can't upgrade
it further, I'll probably ditch OS X here and replace it with a nice
Linux distro...
